This month marked a significant event for the work family at “Carew Counsel” as Judy Hogg, OAM decided to move on from her longstanding work in family law. I have been fortunate to work with Judy for the totality of my own 18 year career and she has been an extraordinary mentor, not only to me, but to all colleagues that have worked with her over the years. Judy’s door was always open to the numerous questions that all junior (and senior) lawyers had and was instrumental in her mentoring capacity. Judy possessed all the qualities you want a good family law solicitor and role model to have; integrity, compassion, intelligence, and an amazing fashion sense!
After working as a solicitor for other firms for a number of years, in 1985 Judy started her own firm “Hogg and Reid” with her friend Janet Reid which grew to become one of the pre-eminent family law firms in Australia. They created a practice which was supportive not only of its employees but with a real grounding in social justice, a firm that was concerned about ensuring that financial disadvantage did not lead to disadvantageous outcomes before the law. She assisted thousands of clients during her career and was involved in pro bono work throughout, and she genuinely cared about outcomes for people going through the difficult process of separation.
Whilst working on a full time basis running “Hogg and Reid” she was also involved in significant volunteer work from early days at Fitzroy Legal Service, Parent’s anonymous, Law Institute Committees, Board Member of Relationships Australia, Peter McCallum Cancer Institute, Member of the Social Security Appeals Tribunal, Founding member of the Family Law and Psychology Association of Australasia, Instructor in Family Law at Leo Cussens and the list could go on.
In 2012 Judy Hogg and Janet Reid were both awarded Order of Australia for their work in the family law field. It was fitting recognition of the significant contribution they have both made to the practice of family law not only in Victoria but Australia wide. In 2013 “Hogg and Reid” merged with “Carew Counsel Solicitors” and Judy has continued to work as a solicitor involved in complicated property and children’s matters and her role as a mentor.
On a personal note I would like to sincerely thank Judy for all her years of encouragement, advice and giving me the opportunity to begin with to start on my own journey with family law. From all at Carew Counsel and within the Family Law community generally we say thank you and good luck.
