Carew Counsel is proud to be one of the largest family law firms in Victoria.

We have fourteen lawyers within the areas of family law, wills and estates, litigation and conveyancing, including seven accredited family law specialists. From our director Peter Carew being named one of Victoria’s leading family law solicitors, to Judy Hogg and Janet Reid receiving OAM awards for their dedication to law and the community, we are proud of the varied expertise that our team possesses.     Peter Carew

    Director, Accredited Family Law Specialist & Estate Planning Lawyer

    Peter Carew is the principal of Carew Counsel Solicitors Incorporating Hogg and Reid, having commenced the practise in 1979. Peter was accredited as a specialist in Family Law in 1990 and currently serves on the Family Law Specialist Accreditation Committee of the Law Institute of Victoria. Peter has degrees in both Economics and Law from Monash University and is a graduate of the Leo Cussen Institute for continuing Legal Education. In 2014, Doyle’s Guide named him a Leading Family Lawyer for Victoria.

    Peter was a founding member of Law Australasia, a group of now eighteen small to medium law firms around the country who meet regularly to consider and adopt best practice procedures. Law Australasia also facilitates special interest groups, two of which Carew Counsel are involved in. These are the Family Law and Estate Planning specialist groups.

    He brings three decades of years of legal practice to Carew Counsel, as well as a keen ability to get to the nub of the problem. Finding sensible and pragmatic solutions to the most complex issues is a key area of Peter’s expertise. As well as working with and mentoring the family lawyers in the firm, he also seeks to be personally involved in every case the firm handles as way of ensuring the highest level of advice and problem solving is given.

    Peter has a genuine passion for helping people. Furthermore, with his ability to present complex issues in simple, easy-to-understand language and his great sense of humour, he is not only a skilled communicator but sought after speaker. Read some of Peter’s writings in our resource section.

    Married with three children, he is well aware of the trials and tribulations of raising and supporting a family.

    Judy Hogg has practised family law since 1975 and brings more than forty years of industry experience to the firm. She has given her time in many voluntary positions including the Honorary Solicitor Parents Anonymous, Honorary Solicitor Twin Care and in her founding role as member and secretary to the Family Law and Psychology Association of Australia.

    Judy is also the author of a number of educational books relating to family law, including her well-known resource ‘Splitting Up: The Essential Guide to Divorce and Separation in Australia’ which is now in its fourth edition. She is also the author of ‘Children Under the Family Law Act’ in the Monash Lawyers Practice Manual.

    Her memberships include the Expert Lawyers Panel of Relationships Australia and the Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychiatry, Psychology and Law (Vic). She is an Associate with the Fitzroy Legal Service as well as an instructor at Leo Cussen Institute for Continuing Legal Education. Judy is also on the Law Institute Committee for Collaborative Law and a member of Collaborative Professionals Victoria Practice Group.

    Outside of her involvement with the law, Judy has endeavoured to help many health organisations both with her time and expert business knowledge. A member of Rotary and their health committee, she has held previous positions as a Women’s Health Victoria Executive, as a Board Member of the Peter McCallum Cancer Centre, on the Community Advisory Committee of the Royal Women’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital as well as on the committee of Breast Screen Victoria.

    Judy’s experience and knowledge in the field of family law is second to none and her approach to solving problems for clients is done with efficiency while keeping her clients’ best interests at heart.

    She was awarded the Order of Australia in 2012 for her service to the law and her work with cancer research organisations.

    Janet Reid

    OAM, Senior Family Law Consultant

    Janet Reid practices family and de facto law and is a skilled negotiator who achieves the very best results for her clients. She has a strong background in family law, including ten years’ experience as Treasurer of the Family Law and Psychology Association of Australasia.

    A member of the Expert Lawyers Panel of Relationships Australia and the Medico Legal Society, she has held an appointment to the Social Security Appeals Tribunal and is a Leo Cussen Institute of Continuing Legal Education instructor. She is a member of the Collaborative Law Practice Group and the Law Institute of Victoria.

    She speaks Russian and Polish and her early career included working as a Lecturer in languages at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand.

    Janet was awarded the Order of Australia in 2012 for her services to law through a range of organisations and to the community.

    Susan Scott-Mackenzie obtained a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws from Melbourne University and was admitted to practice as a solicitor in 1979. She worked for various firms before joining Carew Counsel in 2000 after taking time out from family law for several years to care for her children.

    She obtained her accreditation as a specialist in family law in 2003.

    Susan has over twenty years’ experience practising exclusively in all areas of family law and its associated jurisdictions. Over the years, she has served on various committees and been involved in the presentation of legal education events.

    Her knowledge and love of learning, adds value to our team. With a focus on development for our team, Susan conducts regular seminars at Carew Counsel and maintains current knowledge of the continual changes in family law and its associated jurisdictions by regular attendance at legal education programs, which in turn benefits our clients.

    Benita Crocker

    Senior Associate, Accredited Family Law Specialist

    Benita Crocker has worked exclusively in the area of family law for over fifteen years, having graduated with a double degree of Bachelor of Arts/Law in 1998. She was a Senior Associate with Hogg and Reid Solicitors prior to joining Carew Counsel.
    Benita became an Accredited Family Law Specialist 2015.

    Benita possesses extensive experience in all aspects of family law including complex children and property matters (international matters included), spousal maintenance, binding financial agreements, child support agreements and intervention orders.

    She has previously volunteered at the Fitzroy Legal Service and Women’s Legal Service, and has also worked with the Australian Government Solicitor.

    When litigation is required, she is a strong advocate and often appears at interim hearings in Court on behalf of her clients.

    She is focused on resolving matters in a pragmatic, cost effective and timely manner.

    Louise Date

    Accredited Family Law Specialist and Estate Planning Lawyer

    Louise Date holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Melbourne. She was admitted to practice in Victoria and in all Federal Courts of Australia in 1985.

    She joined Carew Counsel in 2006.

    Louise has almost thirty years practice in the law and before joining Carew Counsel practiced primarily in civil litigation and also in private client work mainly in Estate Planning.

    Since joining Carew Counsel, she now practices solely in Family Law and Estate Planning and became an Accredited Family Law Specialist in 2011.

    She has extensive experience in Wills and Estates, as well as in litigation involving disputed wills. Louise is involved in the Wills and Estate Planning specialist division of the Law Australasia Group.

    Gordon Johns holds degrees in Arts from the University of Wollongong and Laws from Monash University, as well as a Graduate Diploma from the College of Law, Sydney.

    In 1998, he was admitted to practice and worked in his own law firm before making the leap to Carew Counsel to specialise in family law in 2007. Gordon obtained his accreditation as a specialist in family law in 2011.

    He is admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of New South Wales, the Supreme Court Victoria and the High Court of Australia.

    Gordon has sound skills in all aspects of family law and is particularly capable in matters that relate to children and their welfare. He enjoys representing clients in mediation and court and possesses an ability to find both efficient and practical solutions to problems.

    Jana was admitted to practice in 2006 after completing a Bachelor of Law (with Honours) from Victoria University in 2005. Since her admission into the legal practice, she has practised exclusively in family law. Jana was an Associate at Hogg and Reid prior to joining Carew Counsel.

    She is experienced in all areas of family law, including complex financial and parenting matters.

    She also has substantial experience representing clients in the Family Court and Federal Circuit Court of Australia, as well as representing clients in relation to their family violence and intervention order matters.

    She is a member of the Law Institute of Victoria and a volunteer at the Women’s Legal Service.

    Jana is focused on achieving the best results for clients in a practical and thoughtful manner.

    Bronwyn Gunning holds a Bachelor of Arts degree (Honours) from the University of New South Wales and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Sydney.

    Bronwyn has been practising primarily in the area of family law since being admitted as a solicitor in 2005. Bronwyn became an Accredited Family Law Specialist 2015.

    She is experienced in all aspects of family law including: property, parenting, spouse maintenance, child support, financial agreements and contravention applications. She also practises in the areas of wills and estate planning, along with litigation involving will disputes.

    She is also available to assist in the areas of Enduring Powers of Attorney (both Medical Treatment and Financial) and Enduring Powers of Guardianship.

    Prior to joining Carew Counsel, Bronwyn worked as a paralegal for Counsel while completing her studies and then as a solicitor for a suburban legal practice. In this role, she gained experience representing clients in a range of diverse, often challenging and complex matters.

    Throughout her legal career, she has regularly appeared in the Family Court of Australia, the Federal Circuit Court of Australia, and the Supreme Court as well as in local courts and tribunals.

    Bronwyn prides herself on her friendly yet professional approach and on delivering legal services in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

    Jane graduated with a Bachelor in Science from the University of Melbourne in 2004 and went on to study a Bachelor of Law at Victoria University, being admitted to practice in 2009. In 2014 Jane completed a Masters in Applied Law(Family Law). Jane became an Accredited Family Law Specialist 2015.

    Since her admission Jane has practiced solely in family law, gaining experience in all areas of family law, with a particular focus on children’s matters including complex children’s matters, IVF and international children’s cases. Jane also has experience in family violence and intervention order matters.

    Prior to and since her admission to practice, Jane has volunteered at Women’s Legal Service Victoria. Jane is also a member of the Law Institute’s Junior Family Lawyers and Court Practices Committees.

    Jane approaches matters in a practical and client focused manner.

    Sally graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in 2007 and a Bachelor of Laws in 2011 from La Trobe University.  Sally has recently graduated with a Master of Applied Law (Family Law) from the College of Law.

    Prior to joining Carew Counsel, Sally gained experience in a suburban firm and a CBD Asian Australian firm.  During that time, Sally increased her understanding of the issues clients face in relation to family law when from different backgrounds and cultures.

    Sally has experience in various areas of family law including financial and parenting matters and has appeared in the Family Court of Australia, the Federal Circuit Court of Australia and the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria on behalf of her clients.

    Sally is a member of the Law Institute of Victoria and a volunteer solicitor at the Fitzroy Legal Service.

    Sally is professional and approachable, focused on attaining the best outcome in the circumstances for her clients.

    Brynne was admitted to practice in 2011 after completing of Bachelor of Law from University of Technology, Sydney in 2011. Brynne is currently in her final year of her Masters in Applied Law (Family Law) with the College of Law.

    She is a member of the Law institute of Victoria and is also a qualified Collaborative Lawyer.

    Prior to relocating to Melbourne and joining Carew Counsel, Brynne worked exclusively in family law in Sydney where she gained extensive experience across multiple diverse and challenging aspects of family law including parenting, property and child support issues.

    Brynne is dedicated to helping couples reach agreement about issues that arise following the breakdown of their relationship. Her commitment, understanding and practical approach ensures her clients receive a personal service and secure an optimum outcome as expeditiously as possible. Brynne’s strong communication and interpersonal skills also ensure that the best needs of her clients are met.

    Benita was admitted to practice in February 2012 after completing a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (with Honours) from Monash University. She has worked predominantly in family law since her admission to practice and also has knowledge in areas that complement family law including wills and estates and conveyancing.

    Prior to joining the Carew Counsel team, Benita worked at a small suburban firm where she gained considerable experience in parenting matters, financial matters and Intervention Order matters. Benita is a vibrant lawyer who prides herself on her ability to build rapport with clients.

    Benita aims to minimise the angst and uncertainty many clients endure throughout a family law dispute by offering realistic advice, support and guidance, while always remaining focused on achieving a positive outcome. Benita is also a volunteer lawyer at St Kilda Legal Service and participates in their night service on a weekly basis.

    Charlotte graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Melbourne University in 2009. She then went on to postgraduate study, obtaining a Juris Doctor in 2013, also from the University of Melbourne. Charlotte was admitted to practice in Victoria and all Federal Courts in September 2014.

    Charlotte is looking forward to a career in both Family Law and Wills and Estate Planning. She began at Carew Counsel as an intern in early 2014 and is very excited to be commencing her career as a lawyer at Carew Counsel.

    She is a member of the Law Institute of Victoria and plans to begin volunteering at Women’s Legal Service in the new year. She is currently a volunteer with Fareshare, a food-saving organisation which cooks 20,000 meals per week for charities across Victoria.

    Charlotte is focused on resolving matters sensibly and in a cost-effective manner.
