Our Firm > History |
Peter Carew completed a combined degree of Economics and Law at Monash University
in 1978 and then graduated from the Leo Cussen Institute for Continuing Legal Education.
He commenced employment with a firm called Hughes and Stuart which was located in
Ringwood. Within 6 months Peter had purchased the practice and shortly thereafter
the firm changed its name to Carew Counsel. The firm relocated to the city in the
early 80’s and was located in the same building as the Family Court at Marland House
570 Bourke Street Melbourne. When the Family Court relocated to a purpose built
building in the late 90’s Carew Counsel relocated to its present premises at 555
Lonsdale Street Melbourne.
The firm has always been a people oriented practice dealing with family law, wills
and conveyancing. It also supports a debt recovery business (CDRS) that operates
in both Melbourne and Sydney. Carew Counsel boasts two accredited specialists Susan
Scott Mackenzie and Peter Carew who are ably supported by a mediator, two senior
lawyers and two junior lawyers and our para legals.
In the early eighties the practice went through a metamorphous whereby it undertook
significant change in management, technology and direction. The focus had always
been on meeting the needs of clients but with the assistance of management consultants
the firm began to value work philosophies like “file velocity” and “work flows”.
The practice was a founding member of Law Australia as it was known then being a
collection of some seven like minded firms that were prepared to be brutally frank
about each others’ legal practices with a view to improvement. Over time that group
has evolved into the 19 firms that turn over in excess of $60,000,000. Special interest
groups have evolved and Carew Counsel belong to the family lawyers and the estate
planning special interest groups. These associations and continuing legal education
programs keep our lawyers up to date with the law and working as we do at the coalface
in the Family Court means our solicitors are acutely aware of changes that may affect
our client’s rights.
